Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder - and now, the elixir of madness, the opalescent muse of such tortured 19th century artists as Vincent van Gogh and literary wit Oscar Wilde, has made a comeback. Last year, the United States let the emerald witch out of the bottle after a nearly 100-year ban.

Several European and South American brands of the high-proof liquor have been introduced in the States, and a small artisan distillery in California is producing absinthe in limited quantities. Demand is high among devotees and trendinistas, intrigued by the Green Fairy's decadent reputation, and it has taken some time for the liqueur to reach the inquisitive lips of eastern Iowans.
